Medical Credentialing for Dummies

With the emergence of new hospitals, the health care industry is expanding every day. There is no doubt that new hospitals need to hire highly skilled nurses and highly qualified doctors to be able to provide medical care. However, even the previously established hospitals are increasing the number of members in their medical staff to give better medical care. After all, one cannot run a hospital without having any doctors. A hospital is considered good due to the highly qualified doctors working in it.

Patients trust doctors to save their lives and it is due to the experienced doctors that thousands of patients visit highly-acclaimed hospitals to get medical care. To maintain this trust between the patient and doctor, hospitals are outsourcing medical provider credentialing services. Every hospital is turning towards medical billing companies to assist in administrative tasks like medical credentialing. However, new people stepping into the medical field as part of the hospital administration may not have any knowledge of medical credentialing. Therefore, people new to the medical credentialing process tend to type keywords like medical credentialing for dummies in the search bar of their web browser. But they may not get simple answers to their query.

So, what is medical credentialing?

Medical credentialing refers to the process of hiring physicians/doctors as part of the hospital staff only after verifying their credentials. The verification of a candidate’s medical credentials is imperative to improve the quality of medical care. The medical credentialing specialist cross-checks the authenticity of a candidate’s medical degree, assesses his/her medical knowledge, skills and experience. A candidate is considered eligible to join the hospital only after his/her medical credentials stand true. Therefore, the candidate must provide all the required documents and certificates to make sure he/she is eligible. Failure to submit all the required documents may lead to the cancellation of candidature.

The medical credentialing process is also called provider credentialing, physician credentialing or doctor credentialing.

What are the advantages of medical credentialing?

Improved Medical Care: With medical credentialing, a hospital is likely to give the best care to its patients with its highly experienced doctors in every medical specialty.

Boost in Hospital Finances: If a hospital promises to deliver the best medical care then the chances of boosting the finances are quite high. The hospital can use the money to invest in new equipment.
